Kedarnath y Chopta: maravillas de Uttarakhand

En mi segunda semana en Uttarakhand, estado situado al norte la India he visitado varios sitios que merecen el calificativo de maravillas del mundo. Sea desde el punto de vista de la Naturaleza que por su significado cultural y religioso, Kedarnath y su templo, y Chopta y el templo de Tungnath, son lugares extraordinarios, espectaculares y mágicos.

Pero como todo en la vida, lo bueno cuesta, y en este caso no ha sido para menos porque llegar hasta estos lugares no ha sido nada fácil.

Desde el Himalayan Abode en Joshimath, pequeño pueblo a 1900 metros de altitud, y lugar donde tengo mi base en este viaje, llegar a Kedarnath ha requerido un buen viaje. 51 km y 2 horas en taxi (por taxi se entiende un 4x4 en el que deberían de viajar 8 personas pero en el cual en India viajan de 12 a 14…..) hasta Chamoli (capital del distrito) con desprendimiento incluido,

cambio de taxi y 31 km con otra hora ½ en coche para llegar a Karnaprayag,

y otro cambio de taxi y otros 30 km y otra 1 hora ½ para llegar a Rudraprayag.

Es decir, 5 horas de viaje más el tiempo que requiere cambiar de taxi (hay que esperar a que estén llenos para salir) que al final hacen que te pases 8 horas de viaje. Pero eso fue solo el aperitivo, porque lo bueno estaba por llegar. Al día siguiente viaje en autobús (experiencia única),

de 78 km y casi 5 horas para llegar de Rudraprayag a la aldea de Gaurikund 1981m,

último lugar del valle de Kedarnath al que se puede llegar en coche. Como decía antes, uno tiene que probar al menos una vez en la vida la experiencia de viajar en un autobús de línea indio para poder decir que ha estado en la India.

Es algo tan lejano y tan fuera de nuestros estándares occidentales que solo viéndolo y viviéndolo se puede creer. Cualquier hueco es válido para sentarse, con lo cual aunque haya 20 asientos al final terminan entrando 40 personas…., carreteras sin asfaltar, desprendimientos, animales en el camino, y a todo esto hay que sumarle la velocidad a la que se conduce…..Lo dicho, hay que vivirlo.

Y retomando el viaje hacia Kedarnath, desde Gaurikund 1981m, hay que hacerse 1500 metros de desnivel y 14 km a pie hasta llegar finalmente a Kedarnath 3460m después de 30 horas desde la salida de Joshimath.

Lo dicho, ¡lo bueno cuesta!

Pero realmente vale la pena porque Kedarnath es un sitio realmente mágico. Está situado en un precioso valle a casi 3500 metros de altura,

y justo a los pies de la cadena montañosa de Kedar donde se encuentra el Kedar Dome, una cima de más de 7000 metros. La pequeña aldea gira alrededor del templo dedicado a Shiva,

uno de los lugares más sagrados y visitados de la India. Una calle llena de pequeñas tiendas y pequeños hoteles son el resto de este pequeño pero mágico lugar.

Aunque la tarde me recibió con lluvia, la mañana siguiente fue espectacular y muy temprano fui a visitar el lago llamado “Gandhi Sarovar” a 3750 metros de altura, llamado así porque Gandhi pasó 10 días meditando y rezando en ese lugar. Situado a los pies del Kedar Dome, las vistas son impresionantes y el hecho de saber que Gandhi pasó ahí 10 días hace que sea un lugar especial.

Al bajar del lago una visita al templo y luego de vuelta a Gaurikund para emprender el viaje de vuelta. Esta vez el viaje fue diferente, pero no por ello menos emocionante. Primero un taxi de Gaurikund a Rudaprayag (78 km y 3 horas ½, luego un autobús de Rudaprayag a Chamoli (31 km y 2 horas ½), y por último un taxi de Chamoli al pequeño y bonito pueblo de Gopeshwar a 1550 metros de altura (30 min).

Total otras 8 horas de viaje entre taxi, autobús y cambios, pero con la imagen de Kedarnath y de su templo a los pies del Kedar Dome en la mente. ¡Algo sublime!

Y el motivo de tan largo viaje a Gopeshwar no era otro que ir a visitar la aldea de Chopta 2850m, conocida como la “pequeña suiza” aquí en India. Y aquí otra odisea, porque en vez de salir a las 7.30 a.m. como estaba previsto, resulta que no podemos salir hasta las 12 del mediodía debido a que la carretera está cortada porque ha habido un desprendimiento (algo totalmente normal por estos lares). Pero una vez más la India te sorprende y la larga espera y las 2 horas ½ de autobús merecen la pena porque sea el trayecto hasta Chopta que los alrededores de la aldea son de quedarse con la boca abierta y no poder cerrarla. Es como si uno entrara en un cuento y de repente se encontrara en un bosque encantado en el medio de la nada.

Una vez en Chopta fui a visitar el templo de Tungnath a 3450 metros de altura, y otro alucine.

Vistas increíbles y ambiente de fábula.

Después de la visita camino de vuelta y el cielo que se abre para mostrar el Kedar Dome 6940m y el Chaukhamba 7138m en todo su esplendor, y yo que sigo sin poder cerrar la boca de la belleza que tengo a mi alrededor.

Después de hacer las fotos y los vídeos pertinentes decido que basta de pasar frío por la noche en pequeños hoteles (por llamarlos de alguna manera) en aldeas a más de 3000 metros y decido coger otro taxi y volver a Gopeshwar para al menos no pasar frío y poder cenar bien.

Al día siguiente viaje de regreso a Joshimath, tranquilo después de lo vivido (solo 30 minutos hasta Chamoli y 2 horitas hasta Joshimath en taxi).

Y después de estos 5 días de viajar por sus carreteras en autobús y en taxi, de caminar por msus senderos, de ver sitios maravillosos y de chuparme todo el ruido y el polvo del mundo, aquí estoy escribiendo y tratando de poder describir con palabras la locura y el encanto, la belleza y la dureza que tiene este país. No sé cuantas veces durante el día pienso que qué locura de sitio, cuanto ruido, cuanta miseria y pobreza y cuanta suciedad y porquería juntas, pero luego tampoco sé las veces que pienso en lo mágico de este lugar, en las profundas miradas de la gente, en los gustos y olores de las comidas, en la energía que se respira y en la extraordinaria fuerza de la Naturaleza. Es una mezcla explosiva y llena de contrastes extremos que logran que pases del caos a la paz y del infierno al paraíso con mucha facilidad y frecuencia, y que siempre te pide que sigas para delante porque algo te dice que después de algo horrendo siempre verás algo sublime, y que después de vivir situaciones caóticas vivirás experiencias que te llevarán a la paz total. Realmente creo que es este continuo ir a los extremos y a la intensidad tan grande con que se vive cada momento el motivo por el cual la India te engancha y te atrapa.
